John Taylor Velvet Falernum is a sweet syrup used in Caribbean and tropical drinks. It contains flavors of almond, ginger, lime, and sometimes vanilla, cloves, and allspice. It is used in cocktails in a manner similar to orgeat syrup or can be drunk on the rocks. Falernum is idigenous to Barbados, where Velvet Falernum is a longtime staple item of its many resorts and bars. The sweetness, spice and almond character of this rum-based liqueur provides weight and texture to classic rum and wine punches.

John Taylor Velvet Falernum is made from an infusion of spices and lime juice into sugar cane syrup and Barbados Rum. John D Taylor’s Falernum is considered by many as the original Falernum, and is today produced by famed rum distiller R.L. Seale Ltd. This famous Bajan Gold Medal beverage and mixer, has a uniquely refreshing flavor developed by John D. Taylor of Bridgetown, Barbados in 1890. Born and bred on the island of Barbados, this slightly alcoholic sugar cane based liqueur is a staple of every Bajan’s bar and we’ve found it goes particularly well with The Duppy Share in both the Rum Swizzle and The Rum Old Fashioned.

Some people choose to make their own Falernum, as it’s sometimes tricky to find to buy yet it’s cheap and simple to make at home. The ingredients are all common and inexpensive items. Homemade falernum good fun and offers the opportunity for flavor tweaking too.
