Drumshanbo Single Pot Irish Whisky 70cl

The ongoing release of single pot still Irish whiskey from Drumshanbo distillery, made with a combination of unmalted Irish barley and Irish Banna oats. Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-oloroso sherry casks, it offers aromas of vanilla, dried fruit, sweet spices and white pepper on the nose, complemented on the palate by notes of toasted oak, green apples, figs and sherry.

It’s the very first release of Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish whiskey, produced by The Shed Distillery! Made with a combination of malted Irish barley, unmalted Irish barley and Irish Barra oats, this one is triple distilled and matured in a combo of Oloroso sherry casks and Kentucky bourbon casks. An impressive expression from the excellent distillers, and it’s said to be the first whiskey to come from Connaught in over 100 years.

Following on the heels of the distillery’s inaugural release, Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey was launched in 2020. It’s made from malted and unmalted barley, as well as oats—which is in standing with Irish single pot still tradition. The whiskey matured in a mixture of first-fill ex-bourbon and oloroso sherry casks.

Drumshanbo is increasingly well-known for its delightful Gunpowder Irish Gin, and now the brand is moving into a spirit more associated with Ireland: Single pot still whiskey. This spirit is very traditionally made with unmalted and malted barley and Irish oats in the mash, triple copper pot distilled, and aged in a combination of Kentucky bourbon and oloroso sherry casks for a total of five years.

Nose:

Vanilla heavy, with grassy malt and honeyed porridge. A slow build of spiced fruit compote and chocolate mousse.

Palate:

Christmas cake, buttered rye bread, red chilli flake, milk chocolate again and some flamed orange peel brightness.

Finish:

Raisin, hazelnut spread, drying spices.
