A rich and dense red with a powerful palate of ripe fruit and chewy tannins. Lots of blackberry and blueberry character. Expanding tannins. Needs two or three years to soften.
To call this a second label of Spottswoode’s isn’t quite fair, it’s such a well-made, thoughtfully considered wine in its own right. Juicy black currant, tart cranberry, licorice, and clove meet a wall of toasted oak and chocolate in a medium-bodied, approachable, and properly balanced expression of the variety that will impress seekers of restraint and grace.
Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery in Napa Valley, California, known for producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1972 Mary and Jack Novack purchased the vineyard and winery and in 1982 produced Spottswoode’s first Cabernet, exactly 100 years after the estate’s founding.
The vineyards are located on the western edge of St. Helena, at the foot of the Mayacamas mountains on alluvial clay loam soils with cool maritime breezes that allow for the slow ripening of the grapes. Over 40 acres of grapes are organically grown, planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
