The succulent aroma develops with aeration in the sweet forms of barley, cream, light caramel, and a trace of tropical fruit. Palate entry is round, borderline plump, breakfast-cereal sweet, and honeyed; at midpalate, there’s a slightly oily peat smoke. Sweetly concludes with the focus on the malt.
A sherried 12 year old single malt from Diageo’s Classic Malts range, this bottling from the Cragganmore distillery represents Speyside and proffers a rich, slightly floral whisky with barley notes. The Speyside representative of the Classic Malts series is rich and spicy, with a very satisfying complexity and well-sherried backbone.
Cragganmore Single Malt Scotch was founded in 1869 with close proximity to the vital Strathspey railway line that gave access to the south. Its founder was a very experienced distiller called John Smith, who had previously worked with Glenfarclas, Macallan and Glenlivet.
Gold.
Firm, rounded, light to medium.
An aromatic blast of citrus to begin with – orange and lemon oil – then soft aromas of toffee, roasted almonds and malted biscuits follow. Very clean and appetising, with a gentle floral character.
The fresh citrus notes continue on to the palate, joined by sweet toffee, malt and oat biscuits. Very clean and refreshing.
Smoky, good length, delicate peppery spice.
