Lalocura is produced in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, where Maestro Eduardo Ángeles was born and raised, where he learned to distill from his father, and where his palenque is located today. Like all traditional mezcales made in Minas, the agave piñas are roasted in an earthen oven, mashed by hand, fermented outdoors, and distilled in clay pots. It’s a process that has produced great mezcal for centuries.

Like great chefs and winemakers, Lalo’s aim is to showcase the quality and qualities of his ingredients. His mastery of technique isn’t used to transform the agave into something new and different, but rather to help express their subtlest flavors.

The tasting notes for each batch will vary, but at the core of each bottling you will find the true essence of the agaves used, and in a very magical way, the character of Santa Catarina Minas, Lalo’s home town.

Prepare to elevate your spirits experience. Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin isn’t just a mezcal; it’s an invitation to savor tradition, craftsmanship, and unparalleled flavor. Dive into our FAQ and discover why this exceptional spirit deserves a place in your collection.

1. What makes Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin so special? It’s a masterpiece of balance! This mezcal artfully blends the robust, classic character of Espadin with the wild, complex nuances of Tobasiche agave. Crafted by the legendary maestro mezcalero Eduardo “Lalo” Angeles Carreño, it’s a testament to generations of expertise and a commitment to traditional, small-batch production.

2. Who is Lalocura, and why should I trust their mezcal? Lalocura is synonymous with authenticity and unparalleled quality in the mezcal world. Led by the revered Lalo Angeles, their operation in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, adheres to time-honored methods – from wild agave harvesting to clay pot distillation. When you choose Lalocura, you’re choosing a legacy of passion and perfection.

3. What exactly is “Tobasiche” agave, and how does it contribute to the flavor? Tobasiche (Agave Karwinskii) is a wild, majestic agave known for its distinctive, often columnar shape. It imparts incredible complexity to mezcal, bringing forth notes of green herbs, fresh earth, minerality, and sometimes even subtle spice or citrus. It’s a flavor profile you simply won’t find anywhere else.

4. And “Espadin” – isn’t that a common agave? How does it fit in here? While Espadin (Agave Angustifolia) is the most common agave for mezcal, Lalocura’s Espadin is anything but ordinary. It provides the foundational sweetness, a touch of classic smoke, and a beautiful structure that allows the Tobasiche to truly sing, creating a harmonious and approachable yet profoundly complex spirit.

5. Is this a blend, or are the agaves distilled together? This is a carefully crafted ensemble! The Tobasiche and Espadin agaves are typically roasted, fermented, and distilled together, allowing their unique characteristics to intertwine and create a singular, integrated flavor profile that’s greater than the sum of its parts.

6. What can I expect from the aroma of Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin? Prepare for an olfactory journey! You’ll encounter a captivating bouquet of fresh green herbs, wet earth, a hint of mineral salinity, sweet cooked agave, and a delicate, integrated whisper of smoke. It’s an invitation to a sensory adventure.

7. Describe the taste profile – what flavors will I discover? On the palate, it’s an exquisite dance of flavors. Expect a smooth, medium-bodied experience with vibrant notes of fresh mint, basil, and other green herbs, intertwined with earthy undertones, a distinct minerality, and a subtle sweetness that evolves into a clean, lingering finish. It’s truly a connoisseur’s delight.

8. Is this a smoky mezcal? While traditional mezcal inherently has some smoky character from the underground oven roasting, Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin offers a beautifully balanced smoke profile. It’s present and integrated, complementing the agave’s natural flavors rather than overpowering them, allowing the Tobasiche’s unique notes to shine.

9. What’s the best way to enjoy Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin? To fully appreciate its intricate layers, we strongly recommend sipping it neat, in a traditional copita or a small, wide-mouthed glass. Allow it to breathe, take small sips, and let the flavors unfold on your palate. This mezcal is a journey, not a race.

10. Can I use it in cocktails? Absolutely! While it shines on its own, its complexity makes it an exceptional base for elevated cocktails. Imagine a Mezcal Negroni or an Old Fashioned with this mezcal – it will transform your favorite drinks into unforgettable experiences. Don’t relegate it to just sipping; let your creativity flow!

11. Is this mezcal artisanal or industrial? Lalocura is the epitome of artisanal mezcal. Every step, from harvesting wild agaves to traditional stone oven roasting, open-air fermentation, and small-batch distillation in clay pot stills, is done by hand, respecting ancient techniques passed down through generations. This is craft at its purest.

12. What does “clay pot distillation” mean for the flavor? Clay pot distillation is a hallmark of truly traditional mezcal, especially from Santa Catarina Minas. The porous clay interacts uniquely with the distillate, imparting an incredible smoothness, softening edges, and allowing delicate aromatic compounds to be retained, resulting in a richer, more nuanced flavor profile.

13. Where does the agave for this mezcal come from? The agaves are sustainably sourced from the rugged, diverse landscapes around Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca. Lalocura is deeply committed to responsible harvesting, ensuring the wild Tobasiche populations thrive for future generations.

14. What’s the alcohol by volume (ABV) of Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin? Typically, Lalocura mezcals are bottled at a higher proof, often around 48-50% ABV. This higher proof is crucial for carrying the full spectrum of flavors and aromas, delivering an intense yet remarkably smooth drinking experience that truly captures the agave’s essence.

15. Is this mezcal suitable for collectors or enthusiasts? Without a doubt! Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin is a highly sought-after expression by mezcal aficionados and collectors alike. Its limited production, traditional methods, and exceptional flavor profile make it a prized addition to any serious spirits collection.

16. How does it compare to other Tobasiche or Espadin mezcals? The magic lies in the blend and Lalo’s touch. While other Tobasiche mezcals offer unique flavors, the combination with Espadin in Lalocura creates a harmonious balance that is both approachable and deeply complex. It stands out for its integrated flavors and remarkable smoothness derived from clay pot distillation.

17. Why is Lalocura often considered a “cult” mezcal brand? Lalocura has earned its cult status due to its unwavering commitment to tradition, the exceptional quality of its agave, the master craftsmanship of Lalo Angeles, and its relatively small production. It’s a brand cherished by those who seek authentic, uncompromised mezcal experiences.

18. Will the flavor profile change if I let it sit after opening? Mezcal, like fine wine, can evolve slightly after opening. While designed to be enjoyed, a bottle of Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin may reveal new subtle nuances as it breathes, especially if it’s a higher proof. It’s a spirit that invites exploration over time.

19. What food pairings would complement this mezcal? Its earthy and herbal notes make it a fantastic companion to rich, savory dishes. Think grilled meats, mole poblano, artisanal cheeses, dark chocolate, or even fresh oysters. Let its complexity elevate your culinary adventures.

20. Why should I invest in a bottle of Lalocura Tobasiche Espadin? Because life is too short for ordinary spirits. This isn’t just a drink; it’s a journey into the heart of Oaxacan tradition, a taste of rare agave, and a celebration of masterful craftsmanship. Own a bottle, and you own a piece of mezcal history – an experience that will undoubtedly captivate your senses and leave an unforgettable impression. Don’t just drink mezcal; experience Lalocura.
