Whistlepig Double Malt 18 Year Old Rye Whiskey
WhistlePig Double Malt 18-Year-Old Straight Rye Whiskey is a mouthful in both senses, and it’s the oldest WP’s release to date. This Rye Whiskey spent full 18 years in the barrel and the result is a symphony of soft, floral rich, and spicy flavors.
Dave Pickerell went straight to the old-school method of malting rye to create this potion. To make things even classier, they hand-bottled the juice and put it on the ritzy Vermont glass stopper that was hand-press on one of the few existing 19th-century glass pressing machines. The aromas that are released from the Spirit are sweet and oaky, and they introduce the palate to spicy, fruity, and floral flavors. It’s a perfect Whiskey to sip slowly as the sun goes down.
The nose is sweet and spicy. Red apples and cinnamon are accompanied by vanilla, oak, and faint hints of iced gingerbread cookies and bubblegum are also present. After some time in the glass, notes of French vanilla, butterscotch, and toasted caramel begin to appear.
The first sip has a medium viscosity and settles with warmth in the chest. Rye spices, vanilla, and oak are the most prominent. The second sip coats the mouth. Clove, allspice, cinnamon, and peppered oak are present. The third sip is oily and is an intensified combination of the tasting notes listed above.
The finish is long with a candy sweetness. Baking spices, clove, and cinnamon are most prominent.
The 18-year-old WhistlePig Double Malt Rye has an enticing nose and oily mouthfeel. Notes of cinnamon and allspice are evident throughout the tasting process. This spirit has the warmth, flavor, and sweetness you would expect from an 18-year-old rye whiskey. The bottle is packaged in a handsome box and there is a beautiful, hand-blown glass stopper included that amplifies the overall aesthetic.
