Very Olde St Nick Cask Strength Summer Rye Whiskey 118.8 Proof
The Very Olde St Nick legend has taken on a life of its own with the advent of the internet, many claiming inside information, or knowledge about who first developed the product and why, it’s original pedigree, the source of its bourbons, and the story behind the eclectic style. The Very Olde St Nick myth is a reality with a wonderful story…in fact many stories. As many as the infinite miniscule number of releases from this highly prized producer for more than 30 years!!
The Very Olde St Nick brand has long been a cult favorite. Initially bottled by Julian Van Winkle and subsequently by the Willett Family, VOSN now has its very own home in Bardstown—The Preservation Distillery. Of course, this old rye whiskey wasn’t distilled there, but drawn from the brands oldest stocks.
The distillery is committed to producing whiskey the old way and sources its grains from local farms, mills on-site and always sour mashes. There’s no way of knowing just where this special old rye came from, but it’s widely considered one of the best bottles of rye coming out of Kentucky and the first time we’ve ever been able to sell this incredible brand stateside.
How they’ve secured these great old ryes remains a mystery, but what’s not a secret is how quickly they’ll sell out.
The nose is sweet and spicy. Cinnamon and baking spices shine through. After some time in the glass, barrel char, light smoke, and brown sugar begin to appear.
The first sip is somewhat thin. There is an instant blast of heat that coats the mouth, gathers in the back palate, and settles in the chest. Rye spice is the most prominent note.
The finish is long and pleasant. White pepper, oak, and faint cinnamon are present.
