The Crane Assembly G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is an attractive, mid-weight wine. Forward, fruity, and open-knit, the 2014 is best enjoyed over the near and medium-term. There is plenty of presence, but 2014 is also clearly a work in progress for Crane Assembly.

Composed of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 5% Petite Sirah, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon G.B. Crane Vineyard is deep garnet-purple in color and scented of cassis, black cherries, and warm plums with touches of pencil shavings, wood smoke, fertile soil and yeast extract with a waft of menthol. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness with intense flavors, finishing long. 299 cases produced.

Opening with soft aromatics of a wild blackberry patch, pencil shavings, and ripe fig, the nose evolves into a more nuanced melange of violets, fresh sepia pasta, and salad nicoise. Vibrant and energetic upon entry, the vintage’s elegant qualities continue with a refined mid-palate of dark berry fruits, a touch of licorice, and dark chocolate. The robust tannins a result of the estate’s alluvial soils will develop and mature well into the next decade.

Powerful opulence. The 2014 G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with layered aromatics of overripe cassis, blackberries, and plum. Shades of tarragon, sage, and fragrant California chaparral follow closely. The entry is, as expected, rich and lush with a balanced mid-palate rife with juicy stone fruit, black cherries, and taces of graphite, clove, and licorice. The soft, refined tannins bring the experience to a slow, elegant close – flavors persisting at length.
