Pittyvaich 30 Year Vintage 1989 Single Malt Scotch Whiskey 2020 Special Release 70cl

Pittyvaich 30 Year Vintage is one of eight single malt Scotch whiskies in Diageo’s 2020 Special Release Collection. Crafted by master blender Dr. Craig Wilson, the theme for this year’s collection is “Rare by Nature.” Pittyvaich 30 Year is finished in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, a first for this distillery. It is bottled at a natural cask strength of 50.8% ABV. Pittyvaich closed its doors in 1993 and this single malt was distilled in 1989. This bottling is the only one in the collection to come from a ghost, or closed, distillery. Availability is limited to 7,056 bottles in the US, Europe, Canada, Australia, South Africa, select Asian markets and airport duty free in late fall 2020.

Pittyvaich 30 Year Vintage is a rarely seen whisky, thanks to the short time it was open. However, owner Diageo has found some more great casks hidden in its warehouses to create this entry for the Diageo Special Releases 2020. Matured solely in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, it showcases the herbal and fruity side of Pittyvaich’s spirit, all layered with spice and sweet cream.

Single malt from the Pittyvaich is always a rare and exciting sight, and this one here released as part of Diageo’s 2020 Special Releases is certainly exciting indeed! It’s a 30 year old expression, fully matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks! Oodles of tropical fruit notes to enjoy here, along with soft linseed oil and peppery vanilla notes in support. 7,056 bottles were produced.

Nose:

A celebration of tropical fruit, with oodles of green banana, papaya, juicy pineapple and yellow melon. There’s a wonderful leafy green quality too, plus a gentle toasted oak quality.

Palate:

An oily and unctuous dram, with a creamy vanilla ice cream note especially prominent. There’s some Victoria sponge cake in there, along with a dash of red fruits, and a gentle cinnamon lift.

Finish:

Short-to-medium, with more cinnamon and papaya notes.

Overall:

An enchanting expression from a much-loved but long-closed distillery.
