This American whiskey from Michter’s Unblended Distiller in Louisville, Kentucky, is matured in barrels which had previously held bourbon. As such, this expression cannot be called bourbon, as bourbon needs to be matured in new American oak barrels – hence why it’s called whiskey instead. Slightly confusing legal nomenclature aside, it’s bloomin’ marvellous!

Very fruity and sweet, this whiskey from Michter’s positively drips with toffee and butterscotch, enlivened by toasty notes and a hint of vanilla and dried fruit. Technically not a bourbon due to its ageing in ‘bourbon-soaked’ barrels as opposed to new oak.

The reason this whiskey is called “American whiskey” as opposed to “bourbon” is because of the barrels. Bourbon must be aged in new charred white American oak barrels and this one is aged in barrels that have previously been used to age bourbon, or “bourbon-soaked” as the brand likes to say. The word “unblended” refers to the fact that it does not contain neutral grain spirt.

Michter’s Unblended is an approachable whiskey with many of the characteristics of a good bourbon – sweet corn cereal, caramel, vanilla, orchard fruits and sweet spice – but in a much creamier form with softer edges. An apricot acidity elegantly cuts the sweetness for balance. This would be a great introductory whiskey for someone dipping their toes in the bourbon pool. It’s also an appropriate suggestion for someone wanting to try something a bit different in the American whiskey realm.

Nose:

Polished oak, buttery corn and a kick of caraway spiciness.

Palate:

Wonderfully creamy on the palate, boasting notes of butterscotch, golden syrup and sultanas.

Finish:

Corn appears again, with peach and apple alongside it.
