A truly unique whiskey from Colorado’s Leopold Bros., this undergoes an open fermentation in wooden tanks with both house-cultured and indigenous yeast strains. It is then traditionally pot distilled and aged five years in new American white oak charred barrels on earthen floors in the distillery’s unheated dunnage-style bonded warehouse. Aside from that refreshingly traditional production, the whiskey is also notable for it’s very unique mashbill: 64% corn, 21% malted barley (malted on their own malting floor at the distillery), and 15% Abruzzi heritage rye, all Colorado grown.
Tasting Notes of Leopold Brothers 5 Year Bottled In Bond Bourbon
Nose: A dose of grassiness and a strong nose tickle suggest a rest in the glass. After, the green grass remains but is balanced by a soft layer of brown sugar, spicy cinnamon, and melty maple sugar candies. Piquant.
Palate: Very soft, silky body. A robust tongue burn (expected at 50% ABV) resolves into liquid cinnamon extract, blonde brownies, tannic oak, and catch-all spice cabinet spices.
Finish: Medium-long. Warming, but not mouth-drying. Slightly tannic, and somewhat bitter (vegetal bitterness). Fades with menthol and cherry cough syrup.
