Released to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Lagavulin distillery by John Johnston in 1816, this eight-year-old is big and smoky, with sweet spice that becomes apparent with a drop of water. Lagavulin Single Malt Whisky is Inspired by the visit of Alfred Barnard to the distillery in the 1880s when he tried an ‘exceptionally fine’ eight-year-old from the distillery, this is a fitting tribute for the milestone.

Look for a straw hue and unmistakably peaty, smoky scent. On the palate, fruity sweetness leads at first, quickly morphing into a billow of pungent peat smoke. Quite drying, and finishes fiery. Water tamps down the alcohol heat and brings more orchard fruit forward.

After the wonderful reception that the Lagavulin 8 Year Old 200th Anniversary Edition received when it was released in 2016, the Islay-based distillers decided to add this delicious expression to their permanent core range! As Alfred Barnard said of an 8 year old Lagavulin in the 1880s, this stuff is “exceptionally fine”.

Nose: Salted popcorn, honey-roasted nuts, tarry ropes and light hints of freshly-chopped cedar. A touch of burnt sugar sweetness lingers.

Palate: Smokey peat appears first on the palate, followed by coriander seed, barley sugar, cumin powder, smoked kipper and marzipan.

Finish: Layers of apple crumble, toasted almond and ash. Another kick of cooking spices right at the end.

Lagavulin Single Malt Whisky is Light gold color. Nose is immediately quite soft with clean, fresh notes, faint hints of milk chocolate and lemon – developing fragrant, tea-scented smoke alongside nose-drying, maritime aromas. Body light, growing pleasantly oily. A magnificently full on Lagavulin taste that’s somehow even bigger than you expect, and charred, with minty, dark chocolate. A clean, long and smoky finish – subtle, minted smoke, chocolate tannins and finally warming, leaving the palate dry as sweet smoke lingers on the breath.
