Introduced by San Francisco based Hotaling & Co. (formerly Anchor Distilling Co.), J.H. Cutter is a resurrected brand from the mid-1800s. It is a blended American whisky (using the spirit’s spelling of the day). The blended whisky is as follows: 73% sourced bourbon from Kentucky Bourbon Distillers aged 4.5 years, 17% Old Potrero 18th Century Style Rye Whiskey aged a minimum of 3.25 years, and 10% Old Potrero Port Finish Rye Whiskey aged 4 years. It is bottled at 48% ABV.

This is indeed an old fashioned style of whiskey. It goes for upfront punch and pizzazz. The aroma slings cloves, oranges, and fistfuls of malt powder. Much of this continues on the palate, bitter orange, dark malt, and heavy handed spices. To be honest, it’s all a little chaotic. At the finish the flavors dry up and wind down so fast it’s as if the circus was barely in town.

J.H. Cutter Whisky was one of Hotaling’s flagship brands and was a blend of some of the finest whiskies from the best producers in Kentucky and other parts of the United States. Today’s J.H. Cutter blend brings together three whiskies to achieve maximum complexity and includes 73% sourced bourbon from Kentucky, 17% Old Potrero 18th Century Style Rye Whiskey, and 10% Old Potrero Port Finish Rye Whiskey.
