Hochstadter’s Vatted Straight Rye 100 Proof Whiskey
Cooper Spirits has created a unique North American whiskey in the tradition of Scottish blending known as vatting, where a selection of, in this case, rye whiskeys have been chosen from different distilleries in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Alberta, Canada to marry together in vats to create one expression. The selected whiskeys are aged between 4 – 15 years and once they get to know each other, bottled at 100 proof.
It’s challenging not to sip this rye and say the word “boom.” It’s got a silky texture, yet it has a spiciness (intense cinnamon like red hot candies, clove, black pepper, allspice, nutmeg) that wants to wake the palate up. A molasses sweetness and tart fruit complexity adds further intrigue. It was intended as a cocktail rye, but there is no reason it shouldn’t be enjoyed neat with a big ice cube.
Macerated in orange peel, honey and horehound, this straight rye whiskey was inspired by original hochstadter’s Rock & Rye recipes and other 19 century recipes.
Hochstadter’s Vatted Straight Rye Whiskey, based upon official tasting notes, is described as smooth, yet robust with a balanced flavor. There are notes of blackstrap, nutmeg, mace, clove, spearmint, German-style rye bread, black pepper and sour cherry.
The Cooper Spirits Company recently released its third bottling of Hochstadter’s Vatted Straight Rye Whiskey. The blend incorporates five straight ryes from North America aged from 4 to 18 years.
Aroma of nutmeg, clove and toasted rye bread.
Notes of fruitcake, blackstrap molasses and vanilla.
Delicious finish accented by notes of sour cherry, orange zest and candied nuts.
