A bottling that harks back to the very beginning of Glenlivet’s history.

This bottling is part of a new series from the Pernod Ricard owned distillery called “The Original Stories”. Whiskies in this range will tell the story of Glenlivet’s past.

Prior to 1824, the Glenlivet valley and surrounding areas was home to many illegal stills, with the remote location and misty mountains perfect for hiding distilling activities. Glenlivet distillery was one of them, until George Smith became the first person in Scotland to apply for and obtain a license to legally distill whisky.

Smith’s decision was unpopular, as other distillers were hoping that the new Excise Act (which introduced the licenses) would be repealed, and they could continue to operate illegally without paying tax on their spirits. Legend has it that credible threats were made to Smith’s life and he carried two pistols to defend himself and the distillery.

Nearly 200 years later, the distillery is still operating (legally) and has grown to be one of the biggest names in Scotch whisky.

This bottling honours this history, by recreating the style of the early 1800s whisky: kicking the proof up to 48% ABV, and eliminating chill filtration.

The final result is a dram rich in notes of vanilla and cream, alongside additional flavours honey, apricots, dried fruits, toasted nuts, crunchy malt, dry oak, milk chocolate and cinnamon spice. It appears some sherry cask aging is present here.

A top notch dram that is a fitting tribute to the history of this famous old distillery.
