The flagship expression from the Glenkinchie Single Malt distillery, one of the stalwarts of the Lowlands. A fantastic introduction to the region, Glenkinchie 12 Year Old shows off the characteristic lightness and grassy elements that Lowland whiskies are known for, with nods to cooked fruit and Sauternes wine along the way. Brilliant single malt to enjoy as an aperitif on a warm evening.

The Glenkinchie Single Malt label was not well known until 1989, when United Distillers (now Diageo) started marketing it under the  Classic Malts brand. Some wondered why Glenkinchie was chosen to instead of Rosebank, which was the better known distillery at the time. While Glenkinchie has always operated with just two stills, they are some of the largest stills in Scotland.

I think the distillery’s greater production capability made the choice, both for use in the Classic Malts series and for closure, easy for Diageo, as they would have had to spend a considerable amount to get Rosebank up to the same capacity as Glenkinchie.

Bright gold color. Aromatic, vanilla, cut flowers and beneath, a clean, toasty note. Increasingly sweet and creamy, with fresh citrus, lemon cheesecake. Body is light, smooth. Crisp mid-palate then butter icing, lemon cheesecake and freesias. Finish is herbal and drying, a little like potpourri.

Nose:

A light, aromatic nose with hints of barley malt, almonds, hazelnuts and manuka honey/beeswax.

Palate:

Very fruity palate with a mix of stewed fruits, dessert wine, apple peels and honey. Becomes quite oaky late palate.

Finish:

A medium-length finish with barley and freshly mown grass

With Water:

A few drops of water release a lot of bright, tangy lemon on the nose and palate. I recommend a few drops of water with this one.

Overall:

Nothing outright bad, but all of the tasty-sounding lemons and honey and smoky malt all come across as sooty, bitter, or stale. Water does help, with a boost in the tart lemon/lemonade character, which provides better balance and more dynamism.
