GKG Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec from the Lewelling Vineyard in St. Helena was made by photographer Greg Gorman. This wine, aged 17 months in new French oak, is a beautiful, supple Cabernet Sauvignon, very much in keeping with this vintage’s hallmark lushness. Offering silky tannins, low acidity and oodles of ripe blue and black fruits, it is layered, full-bodied, delicious and sexy. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.
GKG Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Was a very interesting year, especially for Cabernet Sauvignon. Although dealing with a drought year, the heavy rains that surfaced in late February through the first part of March helped bud break from the dormant vines.
Because of the drought, the berries were smaller in size offering up a higher concentration with greater aromas and flavor profiles. Consequently, the vines are also deeper in color-beautifully integrating with strong flavors and bright natural acidity.
The GKG Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 vintage shows aromas of cassis and black cherries. The legs are very evident when first tasting the ripe flavors of cherries through the beginning of the mid-palette, where hints of mocha and espresso blend with the violet and cedar-like notes of the Cabernet Franc.
Tobacco and red licorice are also apparent. I find the mid palette offers up a very seamless transition to a bold and long-lasting finish with bright natural acidity and well-integrated tannins-reminiscent of my favorite 2009 vintage. This wine is drinking well now and certainly will age well in the cellar. Drink close to cellar temp.
