Francois Peyrot Pineau is one of the premier family-owned distilleries in the Cognac region of France, and this is their Pineau des Charentes.

Francois Peyrot Pineau des Charentes is a regional French aperitif, made in the départements of Charente, Charente-Maritime, and, to a much lesser extent, Dordogne in western France. While popular within the region of production, it is less well known in other regions of France and somewhat uncommon abroad.

A refreshing and easy to drink aperitif. It is soft and sweet, but not at all cloying or heavy. The Peyrot Pineau Rubis has dark fruit aromas that lead to flavors of red fruits and figs. It should be served chilled or on ice and will also enhance any meal.

It is a fortified wine (mistelle or vin de liqueur), made from either fresh, unfermented grape juice or a blend of lightly fermented grape must to which a Cognac eau-de-vie is added and then matured.

Covering a vineyard of 25 hectares, the cognac estate “Logis des Bergeronnettes” in Jarnac, Charente, is entirely composed of Premier Cru Grande Champagne. This family-run estate, Cognac Francois Peyrot S.A.R.L.,  has a history dating back over four generations and has grown in size from its modest seven-hectare beginnings. Producing wine and cognac in traditional ways, the estate tends their vines in the most natural of ways. Today, they refuse any use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to produce their cognac in harmony with the environment.

NOSE:

At first nosing, I find deep notes of high-quality coffee, cacao powder, and wonderful whiffs of cinnamon. For sure this is no ordinary or overly commercial cognac for that matter.

TASTE:

The palate opens with cedarwood, coffee powder, cinnamon powder, blackberries, hints of curry or marsala spices, and definitely nutmeg. Next are forest compote, dried apricots, together with a spicy kick.
