Dry Fly Triticale Whiskey is made from one specific seed variety of triticale, grown on the same 117 year-old homesteaded family farm as our wheat. Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye, developed in Scotland in the 1800’s. It is the world’s only straight triticale whiskey that drinks a little like a rye with peppery overtones, but finishes like a soft wheat whiskey.

From the Dry Fly Distillers in Spokane, Washington comes a whiskey made using triticale, which is a hybrid of wheat and rye grains. Lots of ginger and dried fruits notes throughout this one, joined by vanilla and oak spice along the way – very interesting indeed! And no, triticale wasn’t the grain featured in the Star Trek episode ‘The Trouble with Tribbles’. That was quadrotriticale.

The team at Dry Fly love to experiment, and as far as we know they’re the first to make a whiskey like this – Straight Triticale whiskey. Triticale is a hybrid grain, a cross between wheat and rye, and Dry Fly uses a specific cultivar grown on the same family-owned farm where it gets its wheat. The grain was created to get the best of both rye and wheat, and the whiskey has the same – peppery rye up front, with a back-end of soft wheatiness.

Triticale is what happens when a species of wheat and a species of rye are crossed together to form one grain, as was first practiced in late 19th century Scotland. The folks at Dry Fly in Washington state, led by Don Poffenroth and Kent Flieschmann, got their hands on some seeds and distilled it. It’s perhaps the only whiskey on the market made from this rare hybrid seed.
