This unique Spanish brandy is aged, like a sherry, in a solera made from casks that previously held fine Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherries, imparting an incredible richness and complexity to the spirit.
No wallflower, this one. The intensity of the bouquet starts right with the pour as waves of prunes and raisins rise from the glass; air contact stirs deeper aromas, most notably orange rind, peppermint, and roasted nuts. This rich, heavyweight brandy features layers of flavor, including cocoa, toffee, caramel, cream Sherry, and oaky vanilla. Finishes as large and robust as it started.
Cardenal Mendoza Brandy was initially produced in 1887 for the exclusive of the Sanchez Romate family and close friends, but the word of the exceptional quality created instant demand. Aged for 15 years, made according to the same family recipe today.
Cardenal Mendoza is distilled from mostly Airen grapes. The solera this is aged in is made up of barrels that previously held Pedro Ximenez sherry, a dessert-style fortified wine. The average age of the solera is 15 years.

Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva is aged using the Solera system, which they say produces a brandy with an average age of 15 years. We like to think there might have been a time where someone misheard their manager and aged the brandy next to a stack of Solero ice-creams, but, we fear this is probably unlikely.
