Scotch whisky was introduced to the country of India during the British colonisation from 1858 to 1947. A year later and with the freedom to do so, Amrut Distilleries Private Limited was established. They first produced mostly molasses based rum and other spirits, thenin 1982 they began producing single malts in the tradition of scotch whisky even though the 80s were not a great time for single malts.

Before Amrut, Indian whisky had a terrible reputation of being cheap and a blend of who-knows-what. Amrut and its competitor, Paul John, are craft single malt makers in India. In spite of this, India only consumes about one percent of scotch and similar style single malts, yet at the same time, Indian whisky sells very well globally.

From Amrut distillery, founded in 1948, just one year after Indian independence, this is a stormingly hot and spicy whisky, peated and bottled at a punchy cask strength of 62.8%. A peated, cask strength whisky from Amrut Peated Indian. Distilled from Scottish peated barley with peat levels of 23 ppm, given 92 points by Jim Murray.

Color: Golden Yellow. Nose: Gristy smoked barley, kippers with a salted butter, peppered bite. Taste: The delivery is youthful and barely reaching puberty then suddenly an intensely malty ascendancy followed by a healthy dose of drier oaks. Finish: A sublime finale for its sheer delicacy and elegance; the peat no more than oozes, there are cups galaore of sugarless medium roast Mysore and finally, as a bourbony trail is discovered, soft liquorice and molassed sugar – easily the highlight of the experience: one of the best finishes of the year.
