Akkeshi Sarorunkamuy 2020 Limited Release Single Malt Japanese Whisky 200ml

This exciting new Akkeshi Sarorunkamuy 2020 limited release from the up and coming Akkeshi distillery is their first ever single malt release (aged for more than 3 years). They have previously released a number of new-make expressions, titled “Foundations” that allowed us to get a taste of the maturing stock first distilled in 2016 and they were well received by fans and critics. This first single malt release was matured in carefully selected bourbon, sherry, red wine and Mizunara casks and it brings a delectable range of smooth and fruity notes to your nose and palate.

Much like its predecessors, this exciting new expression is sure to be a big hit with Japanese whisky fans around the world. It is set for release on August 29th of this year, so if you want to be one of the first to get your hands on it and taste the exquisite whisky inside.

Akkeshi Sarorunkamuy 2020 Distillery is fairly new to the whisky scene and is moving away from imported ingredients, sourcing locally as much as possible. The distillery itself is also constructed to emulate the climate and terroir of Islay. Akkeshi calls this a lightly peated whisky but compared to most Japanese whiskies, the peat influence is quite heavy.

This is Akkeshi’s first single malt release (distilled in 2016), and has been aged in sherry, red wine, bourbon, and mizunara casks. Thick in texture, this whisky offers a complex nose full of sugarcane, ginger snaps, and banana, with layered fruit and savory flavors and a full texture finish.

Appearance :

Orange copper with mahogany highlights.

Nose :

Refined, elegant. Red fruits on a bed of green foam, roasted malt, hazelnut crème brûlée, marinated daikon.

Palate :

Gently starts with candied fruits (cherry) and a slight freshness (mentholated strawberries). Generous and creamy on the palate with melt-in-the-mouth chocolate nutty, reminiscent of a baked brownie. The aromas of spices (Nikki cinnamon, sansho pepper), the bitterness of citrus fruits (orange, yuzu) and malt notes maintain a complex balance. Offering a watering intensity.

Overall :

Sweet and lingering with the elegance of vanilla, the finesse of white pepper and orange peel.
