Aberlour 12 Year Double Cask Matured Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ml

The 12 year-old expression is a fine example of how the distinctively crisp, citrus character of Aberlour’s raw spirit is deftly softened by double cask maturation. Traditional oak and seasoned Sherry butts are both used to great effect, as the mellowed spirits within are combined to deliver a subtly balanced flavour.

Pouring golden amber with hints of ruby, the nose is soft and with fruity aromas and red apples. A fine sherried character, the palate is balanced with rich chocolate, toffee, cinnamon and ginger spiciness, culminating in a rich and slightly spicy finish.

Aberlour 12 Year Double cask is always a good choice – one of the best value Speyside malts around. This double matured version is a mix of traditional oak and sherry casks and is rich and fruity with delicious Christmas cake notes.

Aged in a combination of American oak ex bourbon barrels and ex Sherry casks, the Aberlour 12 Year Double Cask Matured is an overlooked whisky in this category. By owning such little known Scotch brands such as The Glenlivet and Chivas Regal perhaps it is difficult for Pernod Ricard’s Chivas Brothers division to shine the spotlight on Aberlour. It’s time has arrived.

NOSE:

Buttery cinnamon toast, concentrated raisin in the background, astringent woody touches, glacé cherry, barrel char.

PALATE:

Big sweet butter hit, with maple syrup, brown sugar, plump raisins, nutmeg, milk chocolate and more of the char from the nose.

FINISH:

Medium length, with chocolate, raisins and more char.

COMMENT:

A sweet dram with good levels of sherry spice and richness, although not overly heavy. There is a touch of welcome bitter char that reigns the dram in before it can become too sweet, providing excellent balance.
